Update: following this first operation in February 2021, the project has expanded! Thanks to the good academic results achieved by the pupils benefiting from the lamps, the association wanted to equip more of them. In 2022, and again in 2023, new stations were installed. In all, 6 stations and 240 solar lamps are now in service in the area!

The beneficiaries are children who do not have access to electricity at home: in return, they are asked to collect their household waste at home, and sort it using the bins set up for this purpose at the school. This waste is then recycled to raise funds for the purchase of additional lamps and maintenance activities. These activities can be carried on site, without delay, thanks to a training course organized for a local team (Moi Jeu Tri and town hall staff), equipped with components and tools to enable them to work independently. The association emphasizes that this new project presents a more accomplished model than its predecessors, with beneficiaries selected on the basis of access to energy rather than school results, or even no selection at all (one lamp for each child)!

We have already told you about it: the association Burkina Kelegre, from Bretagne, distributes Lagazel lamps in France, and thus generates revenues that help finance solidarity projects in Benin. Between September 2022 and January 2023, 4 collective charging stations and nearly 500 lamps (both individual lamps and lamps on stations) were made available to three Beninese institutions in different regions.

In each place, the lamps are distributed according to the learning conditions of each student, in relation to the precariousness of his or her situation and the expressed need. All the equipment is managed by a dedicated management committee, which ensures routine maintenance and makes sure that safety conditions are guaranteed. Prior to the beneficiaries taking possession of the lamps, awareness-raising sessions have been organized. Thus, all the conditions are met for the installations to be sustainable!

According to the people in charge on site, the first feedback is very positive: “Everywhere we went, the impressions are good. This project improves the quality of life of the beneficiaries […]. The lamp model designed for the students is very practical, durable and guarantees a long life for the device.”

Lagazel Benin, with its production workshop based in Porto Novo, provides all the solar solutions installed on these projects.

Several months later, the President of the Kedo Liberia association testifies: “This project has brought a lot to our association Kedo Liberia, by bringing “light” to the village, thanks to a technology that protects the environment. This “light” is also the “mobilization” and “empowerment” of the inhabitants around a new common project, complementary to the other projects of the association (the school and the collective farm). This “light” simply contributes to “enlighten” the future of the villagers and the surrounding villages because the objective of Kedo Liberia is also to make Kpalo-Bli a village with experiences to share with the neighbors of the region”.

8 months after the first mission, the company Free Salsa has launched the second act of the project: two additional charging stations have been delivered to the Bijagos archipelago, and 110 additional LK3000 solar lamps have been distributed among the inhabitants. Each lamp in the community is assigned to a family, whose name is written directly on the lamp to ensure better traceability. The next step would be to succeed in setting up a system of contributions: the sensitization of the beneficiaries is in progress so that an organization can be set up to take charge of future maintenance costs.

This project was one of the first solidarity projects of Lagazel’s subsidiary in Benin, created in 2021. With its production workshop for solar products (solar lamps, solar home kits, collective recharging solutions, etc.), Lagazel Benin employs about ten people and contributes to improving the rate of access to sustainable energy in the country.
